I recently spent a day working out which low cost printers where the most economical to run and at a reasonable purchase price. It still hold true that the cheaper the printer, the more it will cost to run.
In the end I settled on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600A (CM749A), because of its reasonable purchase price and mainly because of its reasonably high yields to cartridge costs – as an added bonus I got a 3 year warranty. [You will need to signup within a month to get the added 2 years] I bought it from Introstat via myhp.co.za but then came across better pricing at firstshop.co.za
