Replacing the LCD in an HP Compaq Presario F700

A friend of mine’s maid recently trashed her Compaq Presario F700 (F767NR) 15.4″ laptop screen and I said I’d take a look to see if I could find 2nd hand spares to fix it.

Original broken screen was a LG Philips LP154WX4 (TL) (C8), initially I looked for a new screen to see what the pricing would be like but they ranged from R850 to R1500, next I looked for 2nd hand without any luck.

Luckily I had an old Dell Inspiron 8500 lying around that I had already used the graphics card from to repair my beloved Dell Precision M60 and even more fortunately it was also 15.4″ and the same 16:10 aspect ratio.

I found a video on Youtube that explained how to remove the HP’s screen and I then removed the screen from the Dell. The connectors onto the motherboard from the screens where different on the HP and Dell but I could use the HP’s cable to plug directly into the back of the LCD. I also had to use the broken LCD’s inverter with the Dell LCD.

So now the HP has a new lease on life and is running at 1680 x 1050 instead of the previous 1280 x 800.
