Do you need assistance with installing or running old versions of Pastel Xpress or Partner, like Xpress 2007/2009 or Xpress 11.3.1 or 12.1.6 – all these old versions will run in Windows 10/11
If you are stuck, I do offer a Sage Pastel installation service. I charge a flat fee of R1,200 to get your old accounting software up and running. No fee if I can’t get it working.
Prerequisites
System / PC
Some settings need to be changed for Pastel to run optimally on Windows 10/11
- Before install
- UAC (User Account Control)
- Region & Language/Currency
- After Install
- Set your Pastel version to Run as Admin – right-click the icon on the desktop, go to Properties>Compatibility and choose Run this program as an administrator
Install Pervasive
You’ll need to know what version of Pervasive is licensed for your version of Sage Pastel. You can find that on the Sage Pastel Customer Accounting Portal, you will need your Sage Pastel Customer Number & Password (you set this when first creating your account) to Sign in
Version 10.30 works better with Windows 10/11 than version 9.60
- Download the correct Workgroup version from http://pastelupdate.sagesouthafrica.co.za/ under the Pervasive PSQL tab
- Go to the downloaded file and right-click the zipped folder, select Extract All
- Double click setupxx.exe and click Next
- Accept the License Agreement and click Next
- Select Install as a Service and click Next until you get to Install
- Click Finish
Recommended Fix Strategy for 9.60/10.30
If you are struggling to get 9.60 or 10.30 working, follow these steps to reset the installation
- Uninstall Pervasive: Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Pervasive 9.60 or 10.30
- Clean Up: Reboot, then delete the C:\PVSW folder (if it exists) and any ~pvsw~.loc files on the machine.
- Clean Registry: Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Pervasive Software (Note: Registry editing carries risks).
- Reinstall as Admin: Install the Pervasive 9.60 or 10.30 (or preferably the newer version recommended by Sage – you will need to speak to Sage Pastel to change your license as your Sage Pastel license includes the Pervasive Version & License) and choose Run as a service during installation.
Error 1904
Error 1904 (Module .dll failed to register): This is common on newer 64-bit operating systems.
- Run the installer as Administrator
- Ensure you are using the correct 32-bit or 64-bit installer
- Try installing in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP or Vista
If you are having this issue in Windows 11 you can turn off Windows Smart App Control.
- Search for Smart App Control and then click Smart App Control
- Select Off and confirm changes
- Reboot your PC and try the install again
Installation Hangs or Stuck
- Often caused by conflicting older versions or antivirus software
- Turn off firewall/antivirus temporarily. Uninstall any previous Pervasive versions and reboot before reinstalling.
Download your Sage Pastel version
You can get the full versions by clicking below. Sometimes you’ll need to download an earlier version and then upgrade it as the full latest installer may not be available. e.g. Pastel Xpress 2007 v9.3.1, you’ll then need the upgrade file from 9.3.1 to 9.3.3 and finally from 9.3.3 to 9.3.4

Install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 on a 64-bit Computer
Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 has separate Windows Installer (MSI) files for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64 or AMD64) Computers. It is mandatory to install both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of SQL Server Compact MSI files on a 64-bit Computer. Installing only the 32-bit version of the SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 MSI file on a 64-bit computer will lead to failure of the existing SQL Server Compact 3.5 applications on the Computer. If you are developing an application that uses SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 than you should package both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of the SQL Server Compact MSI files and install both of them on a 64-bit Computer along with your application.
To ensure proper functionality of all the applications that are dependent on SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 on

Moving your data from one PC to another
Go into your Pastel folder, this will be something like C:\XpressXX for Xpress or C:\PastelXX for Partner, where XX is the version number of your current Pastel accounting software e.g. C:\Xpress12 or C:\Pastel18, and then copy the companies across to an external flash drive or hard drive.
Backup, Backup, Backup
Losing accounting data is particularly frustrating.
Think Fire, Flood or Theft and think about if your data would be safe. How many people have had their PC and backup which was next to the PC stolen?
With regards, data corruption, I think about backups in terms of a Time Machine, being able to get back to a date/time when your data was still whole. Apple’s Time Machine software triggered this.
The 3-2-1 backup rule is a data protection strategy that involves making three copies of data, storing them on two different types of media, and keeping one copy off-site.
3 copies: Three copies of all critical data should be made on a regular basis — daily or more frequently. Keep the original data and at least two copies
2 types of media: Store the data on two different types of media, such as a PC, external hard drive, USB flash drive, DVD, NAS, or cloud storage devices
1 copy off-site: Keep one copy of the data in a remote location, separate from the primary data and on-site backups
The 3-2-1 rule is considered the minimum, and it doesn’t ensure the quality and consistency of the backups. The 3-2-1-1 rule can improve the chances of successful backup recovery by ensuring that at least one of the redundant data sets is off-limits to being edited or deleted.
