easyfile slow, while running, backing up or restoring

This is very much a work in progress but I thought I’d share it whilst I’m working on it. 12.10.2026

Is your easyfile super slow whilst working, backing up or restoring? I’ll try shed some light on why and how you can potentially improve performance.

Slow Running, Backups or Restore

Can be caused by numerous factors including

  • Large amounts of data – The more employees, companies and periods you have run, the larger the number & size of databases. All added together they can reach multiple GB’s quickly.
  • Not enough RAM/too many running processes – you can minimise this issue by rebooting and only running easyfile. Can also be improved by uninstalling any apps you are not using & cleaning up your Startup Apps. Windows 11 has become more and more bloated over the years and needs nearly 8GB of RAM just for itself to run these days.
  • Data/installation corruption – if the easfile installation or your data has become corrupted it can make things run very very slowly. If easyfile takes forever or hangs on a specific company and period, your data could be corrupted. This most often happens due to power issues.
  • Old or under specced hardware – your PC may be new to you, but still old – PC’s age more like dogs. An 8 year old PC is more like 56 & past its prime. Go to https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu-list/all to see your computers Passmark which allows you to compare one PC to another. This page has the 2 base model intel 8th gen CPU’s from 2017/2018. I’d suggest your PC should be no slower than the bottom rung from 8 or 9 years ago.
  • You bought a toy – hardware not designed for the job. Too many people buy the cheapest PC they can find, not realising that it just does not have the performance necessary to do the work – I’m looking at you Incredible Corruption, they sell some proper “toys”. Often you get way way more for only 10% more spend. The 2nd hand market can be a great place for bargains. Actually I mostly source 2nd hand business grade laptops for my clients. So instead of paying R24-40k for a new machine, I pick up a year old machine still with 2-years warranty for around R12k
  • Spinning Rust – is your PC still using an old standard hard drive? Firstly this usually means your PC is old. Decent modern machines stopped supplying normal hard drives more than 3 years ago. SSD’s are multiple times faster than hard drives, usually a minimum of 3 times quicker.

Monitoring Backups

You can see if your backup is still running by watching the ZIP file size in the C:\EasyFileEmployer\tempFiles\Compressed folder – if the file is getting larger, your backup is still running.

FAQ

Making the backup takes ages for small companies that only has 6 employees.

The backup function backs up all companies every time.

Why does the backup take so long to restore?

Possible Solutions

Work in Progress

If you no longer use the old v7.4.5/7.4.6 it might be worth uninstalling it and the supporting software incl Adobe Air & Zulu Java. I have not tested this as yet.
